Archives
I'm using Flickr for all my up to date photographs now, as I no longer have the time to produce galleries on this site like I used to. All the old stuff is still here though, in the archives!
My Awards Much to my surprise, this website has managed to win an award or two
since I built it in February 2000.

| • Dan's Top 100 Diseases article published...
|
I recently wrote an article for the medical website www.fleshandbones.com, about the Top 100 diseases that medical students need to revise for their final exams. I was pleased to see it is now online and is looking good. Click on the link above to see for yourself, and once in the site go to the 'Revision Centre'.

| • Photos from Portugal trips in 2002 now ready...
|
I'm cracking on with getting this site up to date. I have just uploaded the photographs from two trips to Cascais in 2002 - a week's break in September for the whole family, and then a few days in November when Vanessa and Raffy popped over. As always, thanks to our friends Jo & James Groombridge for putting us up! Go to the Portugal 2002 section to see the pictures.

| • New pictures of Rafferty ready!
|
I've added some more pictures of our young man to the site - they can be seen now in Rafferty's Album. I will also shortly be adding a new batch of holiday pictures from our trips to Portugal in 2002, and then getting on with the WTGC section. Here are a couple of pictures of Rafferty to be going along with...

| • Tricky server glitches?
|
If you're reading this the problem may be solved, but I've had some irritating problems uploading to my server today, and Blogger doesn't seem to want to publish this homepage. Hopefully the two are related, and are easily fixed. I'd hate to think Blogger has let me down so soon - it seemed like the ideal solution to keeping the site up to date. I'll keep you posted.

| • Major site updates...
|
It's been a while since I've had much time to keep this site updated - about six months, a few people have told me! There has been a lot of competition for my time lately, but I'm back now, and have been making a lot of major changes which will help to keep the site updated in future. Firstly, I've redesigned the home page (News & Updates) and will be using the excellent Blogger.com to add new content - this means I can update the site from any browser, any computer, anywhere. This will be very helpful when I don't have the time to sit down for a long Dreamweaver session. A little judicious use of PHP, and the site even manages its own archives!
I'm planning to use Blogger to manage the WTGC news page as well - with the option of allowing the lads to add their own posts to the site directly. Other plans include a new 'Gadgets & PDAs' section. The more traditional parts of the site are also getting a facelift which will be complete in the next few days, and of course I've been adding up-to-date pictures of Raffy.

| • Another baby on the way!
|
This is fairly old news, actually, but I haven't put it on the site yet. Vanessa is 24 weeks pregnant with our second baby - this one is due on the 3rd of July, only three days after Raffy's second birthday. Everything is going smoothly so far, and Vanessa is very well, although surprised that her bump is getting bigger more quickly this time. We don't know the sex, but Vanessa is convinced it's another boy. The ultrasounds have been fine, and this one is 2cm longer than Raffy was at the same stage. It's very active though, so even more sleepless nights ahead, it would seem. Vanessa is planning to start maternity leave at the end of June, and hopefully won't need to start work again till after Christmas. Having said that I expect she'll go stir crazy without going to work for some adult conversation a couple of times a week, so she may go back earlier.
Here are a couple of pictures from the 20 week ultrasound scan. We were paying particular attention to the soft tissue profile of the baby's face. On Raffy's scans, his profile on the scan looked remarkably like his profile does now. Watch this space for more updates.

| • Dan takes over clinical Crash Course titles.
|
It's been a busy week on the publishing front. After finishing all my work on the pre-clinical second editions, I hardly had time to draw breath before Elsevier asked me to take over as Series Editor of the clinical titles. It's going to be quite a challenge, as there are another ten books at varying degrees of readiness, but it will be interesting. I'll try and show a sneak preview of the new clinical cover design soon.

| • GKT student magazine interviews Dan
|
Fame at last! The nice people at the GKT Gazette, the student magazine of the Guy's, King's & St Thomas' Hospitals medical school, asked to interview me a few months ago. At first I thought it must be because I'm just such an interesting chap, but then realised it had more to do with the release of the new Crash Course books... oh, well. Anyway, they did quite a good job, and luckily didn't mention that incident with the Chancellor's daughter and the sheep (oops!). So if you fancy a laugh, go to www.gktgazette.com and have a look.

| • Crash Course second editions selling like hot cakes!
|
I was delighted to hear from my colleagues at Elsevier that the second edition Crash Course books are doing really well. Of the six titles that are already in print, two have already had to be reprinted because they've all sold out. Even the titles which were weaker sellers last time round (Cell Biology and Genetics and Gastrointestinal) have caught up, and in six months have sold twice as many as the first editions did in a year! Excellent news - and I must congratulate all our student authors and production staff at Elsevier for making the 2E titles as good as they are.

| • Rafferty's progress... 21 months
|
As ever, our young man is keeping us on our toes. He is learning to talk now, and seems to come out with new words every day. He copies almost everything we do, which leads to much hilarity at times. Raffy is growing quickly and is now very strong and robust, and runs extremely fast - especially when we are trying to catch him to change a nappy! Favourite things include Bob the Builder and Teletubbies, Winnie the Pooh books, and a large plastic shark. He loves to jump and will climb anything that stays still long enough - he even learnt to stand on one leg from watching the Teletubbies, so maybe there is some educational merit to all those childrens' videos after all! Raffy is very affectionate and gives lovely hugs when he isn't trying to beat us up!
It's not all hugs and puppies though: the terrible two's are upon us and the tranquility of our home (?) is often shattered by the most spectacular tantrums when Sir feels that he isn't getting what he ordered. It's just the stage he's going through, and I think some of it is due to his frustration at not being able to talk yet. We do all the 'right things' such as ignoring the tantrums and not giving in etc. but so far it hasn't helped. I think we just have to weather the storm. Nights are becoming interesting once again, too. Raffy learnt to scale the sides of his cot a few weeks ago, so we had to convert it into a bed. This is all very well, but since he has taken to waking in the middle of the night again, it makes the controlled crying approach rather difficult - he just gets up and comes to find us! Ho hum - we'll crack it eventually. I just hope it is before the new baby arrives!
